Mrs. Ingle begins her lesson with a vocabulary activity designed to focus students’ attention on the challenging words in the short story, “The Colomber” by Dion Buzzati. Even though it is found in their literature book, Mrs. Ingle anticipates that the reading level may be beyond the instructional level for some of her students. She plans to introduce the vocabulary using wordsalive and wants the students to predict based on the illustrations and the words in context. Mrs. Ingle plans to scaffold the story by reading the first part aloud, assigning partner reading for the middle portion, and asking students to read the conclusion independently. Moreover, she plans to lead a discussion to help students understand that some inferences must be rejected as the story progresses.
