Before reading activities
Review question words and divide them into “juicy” and “dry” categories.
Introduce “tear and share” activity.
Look at the art work.
Read opening paragraph and formulate questions about it.
Share questions.
Read title and author and formulate questions.
  
During reading activities
Read with the tape and pause to discuss questions, their answers and more questions.
  
After reading activities
Write power quotes and draw sketches.
Group work with “tear and share.”
Group presentations.
Discuss themes and post reading questions.
  
Homework Think about the answer to one of the "juicy" questions.
  
Self evaluation This was a very powerful activity for almost all the students. Their questioning ability really grew as a result of the collaboration. I think they discovered themes more independently through their own questions than through those I usually ask.
