Lesson 5: Formulating & Evaluating Questions

Mrs. Moody’s lesson is an example of explicit instruction of English SOL 8.5b - the student will read and analyze a variety of narrative and poetic forms and describe inferred main ideas or themes, as well as a review of English SOL 6.5a – the student will read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of informational selections and identify questions to be answered.

The lesson also includes opportunities for students to:
8.5c describe how authors use characters, conflict, point of view, and tone to create meaning.

Mrs. Moody uses a professional reader on tape to allow her students to read along while they focus their energy on asking questions and recognizing the author’s theme. She also uses small group interaction to help students select and evaluate the questions that will best lead to comprehension.
