Rosemary Slate
Stanley Middle School
Washington County
Sixth Grade

Although reading comprehension is quite complex, Mrs. Slate narrows her focus to three strategies, using prior knowledge, recording on graphic organizers, and visualizing, so that her students will become independent with these before she adds more complexity. They are already accustomed to using the context, cooperative groups, and discussion. The text, “Lob’s Girl” by Joan Aiken, is taken from the adopted literature series and is on the instructional or independent reading level for the students.

Below are the links to Mrs. Slate's lesson. For a complete view, follow the series in order by using the Next or Previous buttons to navigate through the lesson. It may be beneficial to print the observation checklist included with the Resources before you begin and complete it while viewing the lesson.
