Summarize independent reading (homework).
Summarize the previous letter.
Read the poem three times.
Set purpose for reading with “stop and jot."
List purposes for reading.
Preview for “speed bumps."
Clarify “speed bumps.”
During reading activities
Shared reading: each student will read aloud the page he or she has previewed.
After reading activities
Summarize in a 1, 2, 3.
Discuss summaries and list key points.
Rewrite summaries in one or two sentences.
Homework Independent reading.
Self evaluation Most of the students are still confusing purpose with prediction. They are clarifying well and finding similes with ease. Their summaries are improving: brief and generally to the point. I need to clarify the difference between purpose and prediction better and to fade from the direct instruction during clarification. Summarizing continues.
