Lesson 4: Formulating & Answering Questions
Mrs. Purnell’s lesson is an example of explicit instruction of English SOL 6.5a – the student will read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of informational selections and identify questions to be answered.

The lesson also includes opportunities for students to:
6.4a identify the elements of narrative structure including setting, character, plot, conflict, and theme,

6.4b use knowledge of narrative and poetic structures to aid comprehension and predict outcomes,

6.5b make, confirm, or revise predictions, and

7.6a use knowledge of text structures to aid comprehension.

The lesson includes Mrs. Purnell’s models of questions and opportunities for students to formulate some questions of their own. Additionally, the students have opportunities to restate questions in the form of answers before they read to find the answers in the text.

The text is on the instructional level for most of the students, so partner reading and a bit of teacher support are sufficient as a scaffold in addition to the teacher-prepared questions that guide the reading.
