Lesson 12: Genre Study

Mrs. Cunningham’s lesson is an example of explicit instruction of English SOL 6.4a the student will read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of fiction, narrative nonfiction, and poetry and identify the elements of narrative structure including setting, character, plot, conflict, and theme.

The lesson also includes opportunities for students to:
6.4b use knowledge of narrative and poetic structure to aid comprehension and predict outcomes,

6.4h paraphrase and summarize the main points in the text,

7.5a describe setting, character development, plot structure, theme, and conflict, and

7.5b compare and contrast forms including folk literature.

Mrs. Cunningham brings the text to life by reading aloud to her students, and she pauses frequently to allow them to demonstrate their comprehension. She assigns paired reading of a variety of texts as a way of ensuring that each student is reading a text at his or her instructional level with support. She also provides two graphic organizers to help develop organizational strategies for her students.

Mrs. Cunningham seizes a teachable moment to model the clarification of vocabulary during the read aloud selection.
