Lesson 2:
Setting Purpose, Clarifying, & Summarizing
Mrs. Heaney’s lesson is an example of explicit instruction of English SOL 6.3c — the student will read and learn the meanings of unfamiliar words and phrases and use context and sentence structure to determine meaning and differentiate among multiple meanings of words. The lesson is also an example of explicit instruction of English SOL 6.4h — the student will read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of fiction, narrative nonfiction, and poetry and paraphrase and summarize the main points in the text.

The lesson also includes opportunities for students to:
6.3b identify figurative language, and

6.4b use knowledge of narrative and poetic structures to aid comprehension and predict outcomes.

Mrs. Heaney seizes a teachable moment to model for her students, who must eventually learn to (6.3a) identify word origins.

The lesson includes three opportunities to write as well as small group instruction and self-chosen reading materials for homework to help students become independent readers and summarizers.

By incorporating a preview of text into the lesson, Mrs. Heaney sends two powerful messages: that rereading builds fluency and comprehension and that readers can clarify many words and phrases for each other.
