Lesson 3:
Using Prior Knowledge, Using Organizers,
& Visualizing |
|
Mrs. Slate’s lesson is an example of explicit instruction of English SOL 6.4a - the student will read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of fiction, narrative nonfiction, and poetry and identify the elements of narrative structure, including setting, character, plot, conflict, and theme. |
| The lesson also includes opportunities for students to: |
| 6.3a |
identify word origins, |
| |
|
| 6.3c |
use context and sentence structure to determine meaning and differentiate among
multiple meanings of words, |
| |
|
| 6.4e |
describe cause-effect relationships and their impact on plot, and |
| |
|
| 6.4h |
explain how character and plot development are used in a selection to support a
central conflict or story line. |
Mrs. Slate uses small group support during reading and a simple graphic organizer to allow students to grow toward independence with plot structure. She uses drawing and discussion, first in small groups and then as a whole class, to allow students to identify key elements of the plot and to demonstrate comprehension at the literal level. |
