Lesson 13: Using Discussion to
Enhance Comprehension

Mrs. Winters' lesson is an example of instruction of English SOL 8.5b and c the student will read and analyze a variety of narrative and poetic forms and describe inferred main ideas or themes using evidence from the text as support; and describe how authors use characters, conflict, point of view, and tone to create meaning.

The lesson also includes opportunities for students to:
8.1b make notes of responses,

8.1c compile and report responses,

8.2b choose vocabulary and tone appropriate to audience, topic and purpose, and

8.2d respond to questions and comments.

Mrs. Winters prepares her students to read independently from a novel that is at or below their independent reading level. She models effective questioning techniques and fades from the discussion to allow her students to demonstrate comprehension independently. The discussion also helps build deeper comprehension for most of the students.
